The Flavian Emperors The Barrack Room Emperors

Rome: The Severan Emperors

193 to 244 A.D.

After the killing of Commodus in 192 AD, there was a galaxy of contenders for the imperial throne, including Didius Julianus who was "sold" it by the imperial guard. The winner was Septimius Severus, who like Vespasian before him was succeeded by his two sons, one of them, Caracalla, being another tyrant who just had to go.

Severus's marriage to Julia Domna a Syrian "princess", spawned an Eastern connection to the succession, not to mention a series of female relatives named Julia who all had coins issued for them. Elagabalus was a priest of the Syrian sun-god, Elagabal. His antics as emperor shocked even un-shockable Rome. His end was also shocking and he was followed by his cousin, Severus Alexander.

Severus was deposed by one of his commanders, Maximinus, thus initiating a chaotic period of "barrack room" emperors.
